Nathaniel doesn't clearly remember the last time he's been as happy as he has been lately. It must have been when he was a child, maybe making strawberry preserves with his mother in the late spring.
Asher has, on more than one occasion, taken him to beautiful restaurants in St. Louis where Nathaniel eats and they talk. Nothing too personal, really, which suits Nathaniel fine for the time being, but most about his day or Anita or, in rare instances, Damian. They talk about the present, occasionally about the future -- usually whether or not one of them will be available for the other on a certain day.
Sex has also been... different. Nathaniel has discovered he's less afraid to ask for what he wants rather than letting Asher blanketly decide for him. He still asks, and Asher almost never declines, but it's a large step forward for him. One Nathaniel is quite proud of.
Anita's time with each of them has also eased some of the tension. Nathaniel feels more secure about Asher and Jean-Claude now, less afraid for himself, and he tries not to focus too much on the metaphysical bindings between himself, Anita, Jean-Claude, Damian, and Richard. He tries to focus more on the metaphysical and mundane bindings between himself and Asher, and remind his vampire of them as often as possible.
Tonight is just such a night for reminding Asher. Nathaniel sits indian-style on the center of Asher's bed at the Circus, naked, his hair brushed until it shines and spread around him like a cloak. He has a small basket of food for himself, and in his hands is a book. For later. His heart simply races, excitement and a little nervous anticipation making his cheeks flush a little.
He hopes Asher was able to get away from Danse Macabre as he'd asked.

"I would not have it any other way," he murmurs, stroking his fingers through Nathaniel's hair, tilting the cover so Nathaniel can see it. "Shall I?"

These are the moments he looks forward to the most. No matter who he's mentally tied up with, Asher was paramount to Nathaniel.
He closes his eyes, purring softly, warm and sated as he settles in to listen to Asher read. And, if he dozes a little, he does hope his vampire will forgive him.
